Athlete Series: It’s Race Week!

Race Week - it is finally here for Kelly!

It’s hard to believe that it’s time for Kelly to toe the line at Ironman California. It’s safe to say we are both super excited to see what he can do as this race is two years in the making. He’s put in the work; now it is time to put it all on display.

Race Week

This week is all about staying healthy, getting plenty of rest, and fueling well leading into race weekend. Fitness isn’t gained during race week; our goal with workouts is to keep the body sharp and ready to roll come Sunday.

Over the course of the week I’ll be paying close attention to Kelly’s Form (TSB) and making any necessary adjustments to his workouts in order to make sure he is recovering well and that number rises to a good spot for race day.

A recap of TSB: Remember TSB refers to the Training Stress Balance. This number is telling us how adapted an athlete is to their training load. During heavy blocks of training, we want this number to dip negative (-10 to -30 is optimum). But during the Peak we want to see this number begin to trend up so that by race day we’ve got a nice positive number (+15 to +25 is ideal). A positive number means that the athlete is well adapted to their training load.

Kelly travels to California on Thursday. Friday and Saturday will be very light workouts to stay loose while he does all of the Ironman things like check in, athlete briefing, bike check, etc. Then Sunday is race day!

Good Luck Kelly - You are SO Ready!
